Women’s Lacrosse Opens MASCAC Play with 7-5 Victory over Mass. Maritime
Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State women's lacrosse team tallied five second half goals en route to a 7-5 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) opener for both squads this afternoon at Maple Street Field.
With the win, the Rams improve to 2-3 on the season and are now 1-0 in the conference, while the Buccaneers are still in search of their first victory at 0-3 overall and are now 0-1 in the MASCAC.
The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead as they converted on a pair of free position opportunities. Freshman Jessica Graham (Woburn, Mass.) struck first just under eight minutes in and senior Lauren Kent (Framingham, Mass.) followed just over a minute later.
Mass. Maritime cut the lead in half with just under 17 minutes showing on the clock as Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) tallied her third of the season. Sophomore Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) tied the game with 7.5 seconds remaining in the frame as she converted a free position opportunity.
The Rams opened the second half with two straight goals to retake the lead for good. Freshman Kristen Hoggins (Harvard, Mass.) converted a free position shot with 23:43 left in the game and classmate Amy Rotger (Revere, Mass.) followed with an unassisted tally a minute later.
Solari tallied her second of the game 20 seconds after Rotger's marker to cut the deficit back to one (4-3) with just over 22 minutes remaining. The Rams countered again with two in a row as Graham and Rotger struck for the second markers in the game to push the advantage to 6-3. Mass Maritime would not go away quietly as Janine Prokscha (Washington, Conn.) converted a free position shot with 17:46 on the clock and Hillary Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) found the back of the net unassisted at 12:49 to cut the deficit back to one (6-5). Senior Amanda Geary (Shrewsbury, Mass.) gave the Rams a two goal cushion when she converted off a feed from freshman Brianna Alimonti (Revere, Mass.) at 12:10 to finish the scoring.
The Rams held a slim 24-23 edge in shots for the game and a 28-25 lead in ground balls. Sophomore Alysha Cericola (Waltham, Mass.) picked up the victory in net making 10 saves, while sophomore Jenna Breautl (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) also made 10 but was tagged with the loss for the Buccaneers.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference game at MIT at 7 p.m., while the Buccaneers host Becker on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in a non-conference match-up.
