Buzzards Bay, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's volleyball has earned the second seed in the 2011 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Volleyball Championships which will take place on Saturday, November 5th at the Woodward Center in Westfield, Mass.
Two-time defending champion Westfield State has earned the top seed and will host the tournament. The Owls will take on fourth seed Bridgewater State in the first semi-final match at 11 a.m. and the second semi-final contest will feature the second seeded Rams and the third seed Worcester State Lancers and will begin at 1 p.m. The two semi-final winners will meet for the 2011 MASCAC Championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships approximately 30 minutes after the second semi-final is completed.
Westfield State posted a perfect 6-0 MASCAC mark as part of a 13-win regular season performance under head coach Fred Glanville, as the Owls are led by senior outside hitter Alex Shaw who has collected 258 kills and 56 blocks to date. Sophomore outside hitter Julia Warner adds 251 kills and 335 digs for the Owls, who also received 907 set assists and 61 service aces from Kerin DeGirolamo.
Framingham State recorded 19 regular season victories and notched a 5-1 slate under head coach Dick Casali. The Rams are led by sophomore outside hitter Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) who has recorded 327 kills and 227 digs. Freshman middle hitter Ashley Nee (Hanson, Mass.) adds 260 kills and 205 digs for Framingham, which has received 836 set assists from freshman setter Morgan Drew (North Easton, Mass.). The Rams, who narrowly missed the MASCAC Championships in 2010 by virtue of a tiebreaker, look to advance to the Tournament finals for the first time since 2005 and are in search of their first MASCAC Tournament Championship.
