Worcester, Mass. – The second seed Framingham State University volleyball team advanced to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament Finals after a thrilling come from behind five set victory over third seed Westfield State before falling 3-1 to top seed Worcester State in the tournament finals.
Worcester State, who captured their first MASCAC Tournament Title, improves to 26-8 on the year and receives the MASCAC's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Volleyball Championship Tournament. The Rams, who have won the last two MASCAC Tournament Titles, see their season come to a close at 15-18.
Worcester State reached the finals by defeating fifth seed Bridgewater State 3-0, while the Rams fell behind 2-0 to Westfield State before rallying for the 3-2 victory in their semifinal.
In their semifinal, the Rams dropped the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-23 before taking three straight 25-15, 25-19 and 15-13.
The Rams were paced by 18 kills from freshman Kelly Brinkman (Gardiner, NY) who also added eight digs, while classmate Brandey Rodriguez (Lawrence, Mass.) added 17 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Deirdre Fay (Cornwall, NY) was solid in the match with 13 kills and team-high 34 digs. Senior Vicki Anderson (Attleboro, Mass.) added 26 digs, while junior Mackenzie Whalen (Norton, Mass.) recorded 62 assists with 15 digs.
In the final match, the Lancers took the first set 25-20 before the Rams took set two 25-21. The Lancers closed the match taking the final two frames 25-17 and 25-14.
The Rams were led by 13 kills and 20 digs from Fish, while Brinkman added 11 kills and three digs. Anderson led the Rams with 26 digs, while Whalen recorded 39 assists and 18 digs. Fay finished just short of her second double double of the day with nine kills and 19 digs.
