Westfield State Tops Field Hockey 1-0 in Regular Season Finale

Framingham, MA – In a defensive battle, Westfield State field hockey edged out Framingham State 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, at Maple Street Field. A third-quarter goal proved to be the game-winner, as Westfield State held on for the victory in a game marked by disciplined defense and critical saves. 

THE BASICS: 

Score: Westfield State 1, Framingham State 0 

Records: Westfield State (11-8, 7-3), Framingham State (8-10, 5-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • After a scoreless first half, Westfield State's Kaleigh Murphy broke the deadlock in the third quarter with an unassisted goal at the 39th minute.  

  • The Framingham State defense held strong throughout the game but couldn't find an equalizer, despite having multiple scoring opportunities. 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Owls Goalkeeper Emma Gniadek stopped all five shots she faced, recording a shutout. 

  • Rams Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Tello registered six saves, keeping Framingham within reach until the end. 

  • Shots: Westfield State outshot Framingham with 13 attempts to 11. 

  • Penalty Corners: Framingham led with eight penalty corners compared to Westfield's five, but couldn't capitalize. 

 

UP NEXT: 

The Rams earn the #4 seed in the MASCAC Tournament and will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday at 7pm. The Owls earn the #2 seed and first round bye.
