Strong Second Half Propels Men’s Basketball Past Elms 85-76

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University men's basketball team used a late second half run to erase a double digit deficit and secure an 85-76 victory over Elms College this evening in non-conference action at Logan Gymnasium.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • The Rams were paced by 21 points from Kyle Philistin. Philistin connected on 7-of-16 from the floor and added eight rebounds, an assist and two steals. 

  • Ja'Quin Taylor chipped in with 18 points off the bench for the Rams as he connected on 5-of-7 from the floor including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. 

  • JD Okafor added nine points, five boards and three assists, while Marshall Kerley chipped in with nine points on 3-of-9 from behind the arc.  

  • The Rams shot 47% from the floor in the game (28-60) including 39% from behind the arc (12-31). 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Elms grabbed an early 17-9 lead, but the Rams chipped away and pulled within two (26-24) on a Korbin Gann three with 6:30 to play. The Blazers, who shot 53% from behind the arc in the first half, closed the half with a 17-7 spurt capped by back-to-back threes to lead 45-31 at the half. 

  • In the second half, the Blazers led 52-41 just under five minutes into the frame, but the Rams used a 9-1 run fueled by three points plays from Kyle Philistin and JD Okafor to close the gap to 53-50.  

  • The Blazers used a 6-0 spurt to push the lead back to nine (61-52) midway through the half, but the Rams used a 13-2 spurt capped by back-to-back trifectas from Ja'Quin Taylor to take their first lead of the game 65-63 with just over seven to play. 

  • The Blazers pulled within one (67-66) after a three point play from Aaron Sanchez, but the Rams used a 10-2 featuring threes from Philistin and Taylor to lead 77-68 with 3:33 on the clock. 

  • The Blazers would get no closer than six down the stretch as the Rams secured the game with five free throws in the final minute.
