Women's Basketball Sails Past Beacons

Framingham, MA - The Framingham State College women's basketball team snapped a seven game losing streak tonight at home with a 64-58 non-conference win over the visiting Beacons of UMass Boston.  The Rams move to 5-13 on the season, while the Beacons are now 7-12.

The Rams trailed by as many as seven in the first half as UMass Boston forced 13 Rams' turnovers which they converted into 12 points. Sophomore guard Caroline Ashe (West Roxbury, MA) led the Beacons with 12 first half points.  The Rams were able to cut the deficit to two points at the break, 30-28, as they closed the half on an 8-3 run capped by a jumper from sophomore forward Toya Chester (Leominster, MA).

In the second half the game remained close as the score was tied on five occasions and the lead changed hands three times.  Freshman guard Nicole McConaghy (Malden, MA) sparked a 6-0 run for the Rams as she scored all six points and the Rams took the lead for good with 12:26 remaining in the game.  McConaghy finished the night with nine points.  UMass Boston was able to cut the Rams lead to two points with 2:13 remaining on a trifecta by freshman guard Stephanie Vaszuez (Salem, MA).  The Rams seniors responded and came up big as center Christina Bordini (Chelmsford, MA), who finished with 16 points and 10 boards, scored on a tough post move and Jenna Haselhurst (Attleboro, MA) sank two free throws to push the lead back to six with 1:09 remaining.  The Rams hit 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Ram freshman Jill Johnson (Mansfield, MA) picked up the first double double of her career with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Junior guard Allie Hart (Somerset, MA) had a solid all around game with nine points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Beacons were led by freshman Norma Cumbee (Malden, MA) who finished with a team-high 16 points, while Ashe finished the night with 14 points.  Senior guard Ashley Greene (Brookline, MA) finished with 10 points and four steals.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as the Rams host Bridgewater State, while the Beacons travel to Western Connecticut State University.
