Women's Basketball Falls to Salem State

Salem, Mass. - Senior forward Danielle Jenkins (Marlborough, Mass.) scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Salem State to a 79-48 victory over Framingham State Tuesday night at Twohig Gymnasium. The Lady Vikings improved to 9-5 overall, 2-1 in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference play, while the Rams fell to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in conference.

The contest was never in doubt as Salem State jumped out to leads of 11-1 and 17-2. The Rams missed their first 13 shots and did not score a field goal until freshman forward Kia Minor's (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) layup with just over nine minutes remaining in the half.

By that point, seven different Lady Vikings players had scored, and Salem State led 22-6. Framingham State managed consecutive baskets just once in the opening 20 minutes, when Minor and junior Jill Johnson (Mansfield, Mass.) connected to cut the deficit to 28-12. Salem State put the game out of reach as Jenkins and freshman forward Whitney Wilson (Lowell, Mass.) combined to score eight points in a 16-5 run to end the half and give the Lady Vikings a 44-17 lead at intermission.

The Lady Vikings shot just 37.5% from the field in the opening period, but were 16-19 (84%) from the free throw line. The Rams were held to just 4-26 shooting (15.4%) and committed 15 turnovers.

Minor finished the game with a team-high 12 points for the Rams on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor, while sophomore Emily Clark (Melrose, Mass.) chopped in seven points and six rebounds.

The Rams return to action on Thursday night as they host MCLA at 5:30 p.m.
