Women's Soccer Picks Up First Conference Win of the Season
Framingham, MA- The Framingham State College women's soccer team picked up their first conference win of the season today at home on Maple Street Field with a 1-0 win over the Westfield State College Owls. With the win, the Rams pulled back to .500 for the season at 4-4 overall and 1-1 in MASCAC action, while the Owls are 4-6 overall and 1-1 in conference.
In a very physical game, the Rams were able to take advantage of a foul called on Westfield State in the 17th minute to take the lead. Freshman Jill Johnson (Mansfield, MA) took a direct kick at midfield, launching the ball into the box, and junior Alyssa Zardiackas (Natick, MA) was able to head the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the year and what proved to be the game winner.
Framingham State freshman goalie Tara Cavalieri (Attleboro, MA) was outstanding on the day as she made seven saves and picked up her third shutout win of the season. Westfield State's best opportunity to tie the game would come just before half time when they appeared to score a goal but the goal was waved off on an offsides call and the game would finish with the Rams winning 1-0.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Southern Maine for a 3:30 p.m. game, while the Owls travel to Western Connecticut on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
