Women’s Soccer Shutout by Westfield State

Framingham, Mass. - Behind a goal and an assist from freshman midfielder Leann Rivard (Chicopee, Mass.) the Westfield State College women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win over the Framingham State Rams at Maple Street Field this afternoon.  The Owls improve to 5-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the MASCAC with the win, while the Rams fall to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in conference.

Rivard scored the game winner just 3:18 into the contest as she scored an unassisted goal.  The Owls controlled the pace of play in the game as they outshot the Rams 17-6 on the day and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Owls would add two more goals later in the first half to open up a 3-0 lead at the break.  Rivard found teammate Kate MacLellan (Wilbraham, Mass.) who found the back of the net at the 18:48 mark.  Senior forward Meg Gearin (Groton, Mass.) added an unassisted tally at 26:26 to give the Owls the comfortable lead.

Junior midfielder Kelly Gonet (Southwick, Mass.) added an unassisted tally late in the second half to reach the final margin of 4-0.

Freshman goalkeeper Kia Minor (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) faced seventeen shots on the day and made eight saves as she picked up the loss for the Rams.  Sophomore Jessica Pieciak (Three Rivers, Mass.) made three saves en route to the shut out win for the Owls.

The Rams return to action on Monday as they travel to Johnson and Wales for a 4 p.m. start, while the Owls host WPI on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
