Womens Soccer Blanks Newbury
Framingham, Mass. - Freshman forward Jillian Waters (Orange, Mass.) scored two goals and freshman midfielder Kim Clooney (Weymouth, Mass.) picked up a goal and two assists as the Framingham State College women's soccer team defeated Newbury College 9-0 today in non-conference action at Maple Street Field. With the win, the Rams improve to 3-6 on the season, while Newbury falls to 2-2-2 with the loss.
The Rams controlled the pace of play on the day as they outshot the Nighthawks 33-2 in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Laura Powers (Norwell, Mass.) scored the game winner in the 5th minute as she sent a blast over the Nighthawk goalkeeper's reach. Sophomore forward Kelly Olsen (Stoneham, Mass.) extended the Rams lead to 2-0 in the 14th minute as she took a thru ball from junior midfielder Melissa Price (Norwood, Mass.) and lobbed a shot into the back of the net.
The Rams would tack on three more scores before the half. Senior Katie Jeffery (Attleboro, Mass.) took a cross from Clooney and placed a shot in the top corner for her first of the year in the 25th minute. Senior forward Kellen Dougherty (Amherst, Mass.) scored her first of the season in the 31st minute and Waters notched her first of the day in the 38th minute as her shot deflected off the goalie and into the goal.
The Rams would add four more in the second half as freshman Megan Gangell (Lee, Mass.) scored off a pass from Price in the 50th minute, Waters added her second unassisted tally of the day in the 59th minute, freshman Hannah Jerdee (Marlboro, Mass.) scored off a feed from Clooney in the 77th minute and Clooney scored an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute.
Freshman Kia Minor (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) made one save and picked up the shutout win in net for the Rams, while freshman Jennifer Anderson (Palmer, Mass.) made 11 saves for Newbury.
The Rams return to action on Saturday as they host Worcester State at 2 p.m., while the Nighthawks travel to Mitchell College also on Saturday at 2 p.m.
