Women’s Soccer Celebrates Senior Day; Fly Past Buccaneers

Framingham, Mass.- The Framingham State University women's soccer team celebrated senior day with a 4-1 win over Mass. Maritime in MASCAC action Saturday at Maple Street Field.  With the win the Rams improve to 8-5-2 and 2-1-2 in the league. The Buccaneers slip to 4-8 and 0-4 in conference play.

Prior to the contest the Rams honored the four Framingham State seniors playing in their final season: Seniors Sara Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.), Jenny Johnson (Pocasset, Mass.), Brini Varetimos (North Attleboro, Mass.) & Marissa Miele (Hudson, Mass.).

The Buccaneers struck first in the 8th minute when freshman Madison Taylor (Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped a shot over the head of the crashing Rams keeper with an assist coming from classmate Brittany Munson (Tolland, Mass.).

The Rams knotted it up in the 32nd minute when Varetimos sent a one-time shot into the back of the net with the assist coming from freshman Megan White (Charlton, Mass.).

The Rams took the lead just under eight minutes later when newcomer Melissa Sybretz (East Bridgewater, Mass.) beat the keeper after a strong pass from Miele to take a 2-1 advantage into the break.

The Rams added two insurance goals in the second stanza. In the 68th minute junior Michaela Hyland (East Longmeadow, Mass.) sent a rebound off an Abby Smith (Quincy, Mass.) shot into the back of the net. In the final minute of play sophomore Shelly Nardi (Williamsburg, Mass.) redirected a rebound off a shot from Sybertz into a wide open net.

The Rams controlled the tempo for much of the game outshooting the Buccaneers 37-to-3.  Katie Levesque (Wilmot, NH) made 13 saves in goal for the Buccaneers.

Mass. Maritime will host Fitchburg State on Tuesday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m. The Rams travel to Lasell on Wednesday, October 28th for a 3:00 p.m. start.
