Women’s Soccer Advances to MASCAC Semi-Final; Defeat Salem 1-0

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's soccer team defeated Salem State by a score of 1-0 in the first-round of the 2015 Massachusetts State Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament on Tuesday afternoon in Framingham. The Rams advance to the semi-final round hosted by Worcester State on Friday, November 6th at 7:00 p.m.

The contests lone goal came on a penalty kick by junior Ashley Lees (Maynard, Mass.) in the 38th minute. A Vikings player was called for a hand ball in the box which led to the penalty. Lees sent the shot to the low left corner beating the diving keeper.

Salem's best scoring chance came way back in the ninth minute when a Vikings player headed the ball forward to senior Leah Wood (Loveland, OH) whose shot hit the post and deflected away.

The Rams were almost able to add to their lead in the 80th minute when Marissa Miele (Hudson, Mass.) headed a corner kick just over the crossbar.

The Rams controlled the tempo for most of the contest taking 24 shots to the Vikings seven and 8 corners to the visitors 2.

Senior Sara Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) made two saves in net for the Rams. Senior Melissa Toomey (Saugus, Mass.) made nine saves in the effort for Salem.

The Rams improve to 11-6-2 overall and advance the MASCAC semi-final round Friday while the Vikings see their season close at 6-9-1.
